Following their victories at the Adewale Isa Foundation Junior Tennis Championship in Lagos, Goodluck Tersoo from Benue State and Joy Emmanuel from Lagos State will proceed on US training tours.
The competition's organizers had previously announced that the champions in the Boys and Girls U-12 categories would travel on a training tour of the United States for a period of time, which they verified during the closing ceremony.
Tersoo, known for his exceptional ball-hitting talents and methods, won the Boys' U-12 title in a nail-biting final against Kingsley Godwin.
The Benue State player won the first set 6-0 before falling down 0-5 in the second set, which appeared to be a simple win for his opponent.
However, in an unexpected twist of fate, 11-year-old Tersoo began picking his points, one rally at a time, and won 7 games in a row, saving many set points, to become the indisputable national U-12 champion in Lagos.
Emmanuel, who also received the US training tour, trounced 7-year-old Karina Opuene, marking an extraordinary run of form for the championship runner-up.
Gloria Samuel, 13, of Ekiti State, won her first Adewale Isa title by defeating Mofifunoluwa Atilola, 10, of Lagos, in the competition's finals.
Seyi Ogunsakin of Ekiti lost to Amir Mohammed of Niger in the Boys U-14 final. Bright Emmanuel of Lagos won the Girls U-16, while Aminu Ibrahim defeated Yohanna Yakubu in the Boys U-16 final. The winners each received a trophy and two tennis racquets.
